  • Carry Sustainable Backpacks
  • Avoid Plastic Water Bottles
  • Carry Essentials in a Cosmetic Bag
  • Use Eco-Friendly Sunscreens
  • Pack Reusable Cutlery
  • Green Food Wraps
  • Wear Ethical Clothing
  • Pack Light

Let's dive into it!

  • Carry Sustainable Backpacks

A backpack is the first necessary item that you need to pack for a summer getaway. Traditional backpacks may not be a wise choice for an eco-friendly trip. You want to be mindful of the materials that your backpack is made out of. Generally, backpacks are manufactured using nylon, which is a broad range of plastics that can be melted down and turned into fibers. Polyester backpacks are out of the question because we know that anything relatively plastic is bad for the environment. You can choose sustainable alternatives like canvas backpacks made from organic cotton. Terra Thread's affordable canvas backpacks are made of GOTS and fairtrade certified organic cotton. It is also free from toxic dyes, and lead and is carbon neutral. They're spacious, durable, and a great choice not only for outdoor activities but also for college and work.

  • Avoid Plastic Water Bottles

Plastic water bottles are bad for the environment; around 8 million metric tons of plastic bottles end up in our oceans every year, killing millions of marine lives. Unfortunately, the production of plastic has not ceased. They are the most common items that people choose for convenience, even vacationers buying and carrying plastic bottles along with their trips to the beach or other vacation spots. To practice a zero-waste lifestyle while vacationing, avoid plastic bottles because it won't only put the environment in danger but your health too. They leach toxins like BPA (Bisphenol- A) into the water, making their way into your bloodstream and cause a host of health problems. Carrying reusable water bottles is an excellent choice for a sustainable solution.

  • Carry Essentials in a Cosmetic Bag

Carrying your toiletry and makeup bag is useful in many ways. The small essentials sitting organized in a separate bag makes things super convenient. You need not worry about rummaging to find your things when you're in a rush. Most people may think that cosmetic bags don't sound neutral and appeal only to those who use cosmetics but that is far from the truth. Cosmetic bags are perfect to carry chargers, documents, passports, medicines, etc.

  • Use Eco-Friendly Sunscreens

Whether you're out at the beach or touring around cities, you need sun protection for your skin. But, of course, a sun-protection that is good for your surroundings too. Most sunscreens contain oxybenzone, homosalate, octinoxate, and nanoparticles which are harmful to the environment. Oxybenzone and octinoxate in particular are dangerous to coral reefs, who are important parts of the oceanic ecosystem. You can use eco-friendly reef-safe sunscreens if the beach is a part of your vacation plans or Vitamin-C sunscreens for other options. Sunscreens that contain vitamin-c do not necessarily replace SPF with it but it helps in lessening the harm that UV rays cause to your skin.

  • Pack Reusable Cutlery

If you're planning for a road trip or going camping, reusable cutlery can minimize waste along the journey. Avoid single-use cutlery as they only make plastic pollution worse, endangering all life on earth. In the US alone, 40 billion pieces of single-use plastic cutlery are used every year. Instead, carry wooden or bamboo-made spoons and forks, stainless steel containers, steel straws, etc. These items are washable and non-toxic, not serving any negative impacts on the environment.

  • Green Food Wraps

Use sustainable food wraps like Beeswax wraps to pack food. It is washable, reusable, and biodegradable to boot. It also contains antibacterial properties which help keep the food fresh– the perfect choice for a green, sustainable, and pocket-friendly food wrap.

  • Wear Ethical Clothing

While packing vacation clothes, you want to keep in mind that what you wear has immediate effects on the environment. Most garments are manufactured using synthetic materials like polyester and nylon which emit nitrous oxide. And, nitrous oxide is 300 times worse than carbon dioxide. Moreover, fast fashion practices unethical labor treatment. Wearing ethically produced, Fairtrade certified clothing is important as a part of upholding sustainability ideals.

  • Pack Light

Heavier bags contribute to more fuel being used for transport. Fuel releases carbon dioxide, adding to greenhouse gas emissions. So if you want to travel green, less weight is the way to go!

Travel sustainably to create a positive impact on the environment while inspiring your companions to do the same. Happy green vacation!
